It is in a dorm room, and has two thermostats. One is on the hot water tank itself, and it gets turned off when the hot water is running through the pipes, and the other is located a foot or two away, and gets turned off when the hot water runs out. The problem I'm having is that every time I turn the water heater off, it doesn't stay hot longer than about 15 minutes. What should I do? (The first year or so, the water was staying hot longer, but since I replaced the heating elements, it's a problem again.) A: The cold water goes to the cold tank, and the hot to the hot tank. What's the difference between the hot tank and the hot water pipes? They are probably disconnected. The hot tank has a single input, and the hot water pipes have double inputs. Either the valves have not been properly turned off (and we're left with the hot tank being too warm), or they are not cold enough to maintain the hot water flowing through the pipes. You should isolate the hot tank so you can remove the water tank, and see if the hot water hoses have been disconnected from the hot tank. That'll tell you if it's the temperature. If the valves have not been properly set, and it's time to change them, take that opportunity to set them correctly. I did some work on this a few years ago, and had a great success. But it made me realize how much simpler things worked when I had a little more knowledge, equipment, and experience.
